As I spend time with men who are navigating the transition from career-centered significance to a deeper sense of purpose in the second half of life, there are several key points that continue to resonate in our discussions.

  • Retirement is not the end of purpose or significance. It is an opportunity to create a different type of impact.
    • 2 Timothy 2:2 “and what you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses entrust to faithful men, who will be able to teach others also.”
  • My job title is gone. Now what? My identity must be rooted in Christ rather than my career. Retirement often exposes where we have placed our identity.
    • Ephesians 2:10 “For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.”
  • Retirement can create a space for things (including relationships) that were often overlooked during our career. We have opportunities to deepen spiritual disciplines, serve the church, and invest in relationships.
    • Psalm 90:12 “So teach us to number our days that we may get a heart of wisdom.”
  • Finishing strong is better than starting fast. Similar to running a marathon. The second half is more about endurance, wisdom, and faithfulness. Our most influential years might still be ahead of us.
    • 2 Timothy 4:7-8 “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Henceforth there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will reward to the me on that day, and not only to me but also to all who have loved his appearing,”

God purpose for man does not end when his career ends. The question is no longer, “What have I achieved?” but “Who am I helping become all that God intends them to be?” If you are in your second half or approaching it soon, let me encourage you to consider joining a second half group.
