Our Wednesday morning 2nd Half group has been discussing The True Measure of a Man by Richard Simmons. The discussion has produced valuable insights—ones I’d like to share.
How Do You Measure Success?
How do you measure success? Our culture measures success by career achievements, financial security, athletic ability, influence, possessions, or the admiration of others.
Retirement has a way of exposing what we have been trusting. When the title disappears and the calendar slows down, another critical question emerges:
Who am I now?
The answer is not found in what we do, but in whose we are. Here are a few additional thoughts on how we can answer this question
1) Our Worth Is Determined by Grace, Not Performance
Our worth is determined by grace rather than how well we perform. The value of a Christian man is not determined by his resume, but by the finished work of Christ. Our standing before God is received through faith in Jesus Christ.
2) Character Will Outlast Achievement
A successful career is commendable. A Christlike character is lasting.
3) Faithfulness Is God’s Standard
Faithfulness in marriage, faithfulness in parenting and grandparenting, faithfulness in serving your church, faithfulness in prayer, and faithfulness when no one is watching—this is God’s standard.
4) The 2nd Half Is a Season to Influence Others
We can influence others. One of the greatest gifts an older man can give is a life that leads others to Christ. Building a legacy happens gradually, with each passing day.
Questions to Consider as You Move Toward Your 2nd Half
As men in the 2nd half of life, our calling should not be to chase significance through achievement, but to pursue faithfulness through obedience to God’s Word. I encourage you to consider these questions:
- What has most shaped my identity throughout my life?
- If I lost my career and achievements, where would I find a sense of security?
- Which Christlike qualities is God seeking to develop in me today?
- What kind of legacy am I leaving for my family and the next generation?
A Closing Encouragement
As you spend time with the Lord this week, ask for forgiveness for measuring your life by the world’s standards. Ask God to make you faithful in every season—and help you find your identity in Christ alone.
