The mark of humility before God is manifested in a heart of gratitude! Only a humble man recognizes that all that he has…and all that he is…has come to him as a gift…provided to him by his Creator! We see this spiritually as it relates to God’s provision for us in the complete, total, and unfathomable forgiveness in Christ—offered to us as a gift! (It is free—but it wasn’t cheap!) When one stands before the cross—and recognizes its over-whelming significance—he is humbled to his knees in reverence and awe! Over-whelmed by gratefulness—our hearts over flow with worship and obedience.
We, also, see God’s generous provision for us in the way He has met our needs! He has blessed us with sound minds, healthy bodies, prosperous careers, good friends, loving families, comfortable homes, bountiful meals, and…(the list goes on and on!). It is at this point that God reminds us to “remember…and give Him thanks” for His abundant generosity! He reminds us…because we have proud hearts that think too highly of ourselves—and too little of Him! God said it like this…
“…and when you have eaten and are satisfied, you shall bless the lord your God for the good land which he has given you. Beware, lest you should forget the Lord your God…lest when you have eaten and are satisfied, and have built good houses and lived in them, and when your herds and your flocks multiply, and all that you have multiplies, then your heart becomes proud, and you forget the Lord your God…otherwise you may say in your heart that, “My power and the strength of my hand made me this wealth.” But you shall remember the Lord your God, for it is He who is giving you power to make wealth, that He may confirm His Covenant which he swore to your fathers,” Deut. 8:10-18
Let us all be reminded that God has provided for our every need—spiritually, socially and physically! He is good…and He has been good to us! Our humble response is to recognize His generosity, to thank Him, and to live our lives in a way that bring Him praise!
