I have set the Lord continually before me;
Because He is at my right hand, I will not be shaken.  (Ps. 16:8)

Storms are a part of life.  They come us in the form of physical storms, as well as, emotional storms—but they always cause us to be afraid.  Storms rattle us, and they cause us to want to find refuge…to find a safe place that is secure!

When tornados come—we run to the storm shelter.  When emotional storms come we might attempt to lean upon our own strength, our friends, or even resort to drinking or drugs for comfort.  While having good friends is a blessing, they simply can not give us the peace and security we long for—we need someone much bigger than our storm to lean on.  We need God!

King David, who wrote Psalm 16, recognized that his only refuge was God—so David sought Him. He ran to God. David trusted God.  As a result, David was not shaken. He was not rattled, because he recognized that God is the only One who can provide security and comfort in life’s storms.  David realized that there is no other.

Today, if you find yourself in a storm—a place where you are uneasy and fearful—know that the Lord is able.  He is with us.  He is the only One who can calm the storm. But even if He doesn’t calm the storm–He is the only One who can calm our hearts in the storm and grant us peace.  He, alone, is the refuge we need—let’s remember to be like King David and run to him when we find ourselves in a storm!
