Recently, while I was reading through the book of Ephesians, I came upon these words, “…speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody with your heart to the Lord, always giving thanks for all things…”(Eph.5:19-20).   As I contemplated these words I was impressed with the idea that–every heart sings a melody.

Our hearts are constantly singing/ humming a song that God (and those around us) hear. The question that I was struck with was this: what is the melody of my heart?  Now, when I am quiet long enough to listen, I either hear my heart singing songs of frustration, anger, and discontent, OR I hear my heart singing songs of thankfulness, joy and peace!

The song my heart sings is determined by “who” is in charge of my life at any given point.  It is either myself, or it is God (along with the empowerment of the Holy Spirit).

If we listen to the song of our hearts—we can readily determine if we are following our own ambitions or if we are following God. God is listening…and those around us are also! My prayer is that we would all be filled with the power of the Holy Spirit (Eph. 5:18) by surrendering to Him and seeking to build His kingdom.  If we do—then God will be pleased, other will be blessed, and we will enjoy God’s songs of peace and joy!
